~ Course Overview

This five-day nationally recognised training course will provide the theoretical and practical knowledge required to operate a Portal Boom crane, which can be defined as and covers a crane mounted on a portal frame, which is supported along runways which the crane may travel. 

Successful completion of the training will also allow the participant to apply for a Portal Boom crane high-risk work license, (class CP) from WorkSafe Western Australia (note that there is an additional cost payable directly to WorkSafe WA).

~ Recommended For

Any person who has the requirement to shift loads utilising a Portal Boom crane.

~ Pre-requisites

The participant must have a sound knowledge of the English language and basic mathematical concepts.

~ Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this training, the participant will be able to:

  • Accurately record and maintain information relating to crane operations
  • Communicate in the workplace with hand signals, whistles and two-way radios
  • Communication effectively with other site personnel
  • Load data into crane computer (where fitted) and check operation to accurately reflect the
    crane configuration
  • Operate a Portal Boom crane for the lifting and moving of loads to the safe working capacity in
    conjunction with other associated personnel
  • Apply current risk assessment and hazard control strategies to the positioning and safe
    operation of the crane
  • Use and interpret crane manufacturer's specifications and data, including load charts to
    enable the crane to be configured for the load
  • Verify problems and equipment faults and demonstrate appropriate response procedures

~ Assessment

Theoretical assessment for this unit comprises a closed book and unassisted written knowledge assessment of approximately 95 questions. The assessment will further include approximately 3 questions on mathematical calculations. There will also be a practical assessment of competency consisting of various load-shifting related tasks. Your assessor will be a qualified WorkSafe WA assessor.

All training personnel have many years experience in the construction and mining industry, as well as holding the relevant certification for training and assessing and are committed to providing participants with the best possible training services. Your assessor for this training will be an accredited WorkSafe WA Assessor. Your assessor for this training will also be an accredited WorkSafe WA Assessor, ensuring that you meet the requirements laid down by WorkSafe WA to receive your license for this high-risk work.

~ Location

Training can be conducted on-site Australia wide or at our training centre located at 12 Sparks Road, Henderson, Perth, WA. Training may also be conducted internationally. 

~ Alternative Learning Methods

The preferred method of delivery of this course is intensive, classroom and practical based learning, however alternative methods of delivery are available for this unit. The participant, after enrolling with Coastal Enterprises (WA) Pty Ltd for this course, may undertake workplace (on-the job) training for this course under the supervision and instruction of a "CT" licensed crane operator. With workplace training, assessment will still be required by a Coastal Enterprises (WA) Pty Ltd WorkSafe Assessor to ensure the participant meets the competency standards required for licensing. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is also offered for this unit, and on proof of evidence the course time may be reduced to asssessment time only (1-2 days). Contact our office for more details.

All learning materials (including a comprehensive learner guide), consumables & equipment. Tea, coffee and chilled/filtered water are also provided on public courses.

~ Required Resources

  • Hardened-toe Safety Work Boots (MUST be supplied and worn by the participant)
  • Hard Hat
  • High-visibility Clothing

  • 100 points of Identification
  • Current WorkSafe License (if previously obtained).
  • A Portal Boom crane will be required for this training. The client must arrange access for a Portal Boom crane to be utilised during the practical aspects of this training course and assessment.

NOTE: Access to the components as listed in the course overview will be required if training is to be conducted on-site.
